Snob Shop Owner Explains Sudden Closure

Joann MacDougall Says Customers Will Get Clothes, Money Owed

The owner of a popular consignment store that closed abruptly this week told 7NEWS that her customers will get their clothes back.

Joann MacDougall said she had to close her store because her landlord's attorney told her attorney they were going to change the locks.

"I'm sorry that the store closed," MacDougall told a customer via cell phone. "It was very abrupt because I had a dispute with my landlord."

MacDougall told 7NEWS that once she learned the locks would be changed, she focused on getting the inventory out.

"I left everything that belonged to me, including the counters and racks," she said.

When asked why, she replied, "Because I cared about their stuff first. That's what mattered to me."

On Wednesday, customer Irene Rawlings told 7NEWS that she was distressed by the sudden closure because there was no communication.

"I had about a $1,000 worth of clothes I was trying to sell," Rawlings said. "I was going to donate half of that to Dress for Success."

When asked why she hadn't posted a note or phone number on the window so customers weren't left in a lurch, MacDougall said, "I didn't have a phone number to post."

She also said she was overwhelmed with the move.

MacDougall's friend, Karen Belke, told 7NEWS, "Joann has doggedly worked to secure all of the consigned items that were at the store. She literally hasn't slept in three days."

Now, MacDougall is using her boyfriend's phone and account information from her computer to contact customers.

She's telling them what happened and is explaining how she plans to setup three pickup places so they can get their clothes and money owed back.

"If I have to, I'll get in my car and drive it to their house for them," she said. "I'm totally dedicated to this. I would never cheat anyone. And I'm not going to stop doing the right thing, no matter what the media or anyone else says about me."
