DENVER -- There’s an effort by child safety experts in Colorado to clear up the confusion over car seat laws. If the Colorado legislature passes a bill dealing with the issue, the age of your child may take on added importance.Parents tell 7News, the child restraint law in Colorado can be difficult to understand."As far as the weights, and the different restraints and what type of seat your child should be in,” said parent Leasia Robinson.
To help make the laws easier to understand, there's a push by The Children’s Hospital to change the child restraint law in Colorado.Instead of basing it solely on height and weight, many health care providers feel anyone under 8 years old should be in a restraint. At that age, a majority of kids are big enough to use just the seat belt."Our children in Colorado are our most precious cargo,” said child safety expert Selena Silva of The Children’s Hospital."Very, very few parents know how tall their children are. All of them know when their birthday is," said Silva. Not everyone is so keen on this idea. One lawmaker has called it a “feel good bill,” noting it would be difficult to enforce. If passed, this would be a secondary offense, meaning you can’t be pulled over just for that.
