BOULDER -- The lesbian parents of two children barred from re-enrolling at a Roman Catholic school in Boulder because of the parents' sexual orientation said they won't give up their faith. The women, who asked that their names not be used, said in a written statement that they initially felt hurt and angry over the decision but are moving forward. They said they don't expect the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish school to modify its teachings but also say it is wrong to punish children for who their parents are.The women said they are Catholics who regularly attended services at Sacred Heart and baptized their children there.
"When we were allowed to have our children baptized, we made a promise to raise our children in the Catholic faith," they said. "We now feel like our attempts at fulfilling this promise are being undermined by the church itself."Their statement was read Monday at a community forum hosted by Boulder Pride. Parents of other students say they're pushing to have the pope review the school's decision. Read the entire statement on Boulder Pride's Web site.Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput has said the decision conforms with church teachings.
