DENVER -- The Broncos cut backup quarterback Chris Simms Monday -- a day after trading for Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn.Simms, who just played parts of two games last season, was expected make $2.54 million next season.Simms' only 2009 start, against the Chargers at home in November, went badly and he was benched after three series as an injured Kyle Orton retook the field. It was Simms' only second start since 2006 when he was badly battered while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and required emergency surgery to remove his spleen.
In the trade for Quinn, the Broncos sent fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 6th-round draft selection and a conditional 2012 draft selection to the Browns. The trade is "pending physicals," Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said in a press release.Kyle Orton remains the Broncos' starting quarterback, according to the Denver Post. Quinn's departure comes one day after the Browns agreed to terms with free agent Jake Delhomme on a two-year contract.Quinn went 3-9 in 12 starts for Cleveland, which drafted him in the first round of the 2007 draft. He did have a season-ending foot injury last season."I appreciate everything Brady did for us last year and in his three seasons with the Cleveland Browns," coach Eric Mangini said in a statement reported by the Post. "He is professional in the way he goes about doing his job and worked extremely hard at every aspect of his game. I wish him the best of success in Denver."Quinn won Cleveland's starting job last season, but was benched after two and a half games for Derek Anderson. Quinn eventually got his job back when Anderson struggled but the former Notre Dame star was hindered by inaccuracy and never developed into the player the Browns had hoped. His days in Cleveland appeared numbered when new president Mike Holmgren failed to endorse Quinn as the Browns' future starter, according to the Post. The Broncos reportedly pursued Quinn last season when they were trying to replace Jay Cutler.
