UPDATED: 5:38 pm MST March 12, 2010

Police at Colorado State University are investigating a fatal mishap involving a train and a pedestrian.

According to police, a male victim was killed when he was run over by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train at 1:20 p.. at Old Main Street and Mason Street, just east of The Oval.

Police said they don't know if the victim was a student or employee of CSU.

Several witnesses said the man was standing about 10 feet away from the train when he suddenly jumped into it, falling underneath. The train crew didn't know anyone had been hit and didn't stop until they were alerted about two miles south of location.

CSU Access Affected

CSU traffic was re-routed away from the East side of campus.

  • Laurel and Prospect are open to traffic.
  • ALL other roads on the east side of campus were closed Friday afternoon.
  • The intersection of Horsetooth Road and Mason Street was closed for approximately 6 to 8 hours as police investigated the accident.

People are asked to avoid the area of the railroad tracks and use other campus entrances and exits if at all possible. The roads will remain blocked into Friday evening.

People who may have witnessed the train-pedestrian accident on campus and need support are encouraged to contact the University Counseling Center at 970-491-6053.
