Police: Car Stolen With Child Inside

Police Say Driver Left Car Running To Warm It Up

POSTED: 6:58 am MST March 12, 2010
UPDATED: 9:51 am MST March 12, 2010

Police are looking for the man who tried to steal an idling car with a 6-year-old girl inside Friday morning.

The Pontiac Grand Am was taken from outside a home on Jackson Street near 28th Avenue in Denver around 5 a.m.

The girl's mother started the Grand Am and left the child inside as it was warming up. That's when someone got into the car and drove away, said Matt Murray of the Denver Police Department.

Police found the vehicle six minutes later about a block away on Harrison Street. The child was inside and was unharmed, Murray said.

Witnesses said they saw a black heavyset man with a brown jacket leave the scene. No arrests have been made.

Denver police said cars left running on winter mornings are easy targets for thieves. Police get reports of such thefts almost weekly.

Denver law prohibits drivers leaving vehicles running unattended. Murray said he was not sure if the driver would be cited for "puffing," and that the girl's mother has probably already learned a lesson.
