First Fireworks Summons Of Season Issued To 11-Year-Old

Police To Step Up Patrol To Catch Violators

An 11-year-old girl has become the first person cited for using illegal fireworks in the West Metro Fire District. Authorities said Thursday that the girl was setting off bottle rockets and was stopped before causing any damage.

Authorities expect to issue many more summons for fireworks violations this Fourth of July season and warned that the penalties have stiffened. Lakewood and Jefferson counties have increased their recommended fines for fireworks violations from $250 to $300.

Any fireworks that leave the ground are illegal in Colorado and it's illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to use or possess fireworks without adult supervision, firefighters reminded.

Most cities, including the city of Lakewood, also ban the sale, possession and use of all fireworks but ordinances vary. Fireworks typically purchased out of state are illegal in Colorado but that hasn't stopped people from making the trek to Wyoming to purchase them, police said.

Parents of children who use fireworks can be held accountable and may face criminal charges as well, prosecutors warned.

While permissible fireworks may seem harmless, they continue to account for many of the fireworks-related fires and injuries, said West Metro firefighters. Half of all fireworks injuries also occur among those under age 15, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Firefighters, Lakewood police officers and deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department will be stepping up patrols on July 3 and 4 to catch violators. A hotline number has been set up so residents can call and report violations without tying up the 911 emergency phone system. To complain about fireworks call (303) 987-7111 in Lakewood and (303) 271-0211 in unincorporated Jefferson county.
