OnStar Helps Police Find Armed Robbery, Car Theft Suspect

Colo. Springs Police Catch Suspect With The Help Of Vehicle Tracking

POSTED: 4:20 pm MST March 11, 2010

A man police suspect of using a gun to rob a fast food restaurant, and stealing two cars got caught with the help of OnStar technology, according to police. Colorado Springs Police and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office found the man because a car he was suspected of stealing had a tracking system installed.

Jonathan Gaide, 28, is in custody suspected of robbing a liquor store, stabbing the store's clerk Tuesday, stealing a cab Wednesday night, robbing a Carl's Jr. Restaurant early Thursday morning and then stealing another car later in the morning.

A victim of the Carl's Jr. robbery told police there was a woman in the car with Gaide. That woman has yet to be found.

The victim at Carl's Jr. told Colorado Springs police that Gaide made a drive-through order around 4:16 Thursday morning. The victim told police that when Gaide approached the window, he pointed a gun and demanded money. Police said Gaide then took off in the suspected stolen cab. Colorado Springs police chased the cab briefly, but called off the pursuit when it became too dangerous for other drivers.

Around 6:20 a.m. the El Paso County Sheriff's Office called Colorado Springs police to let them know they found the stolen cab in the county's jurisdiction. Police officers went to the location and helped sheriff's deputies search for the suspect.

At 7:24 a.m., the sheriff's office received a report that a man who could be Gaide went into a person's home, stole the homeowner's purse and keys to her Chevrolet Trailblazer. Police officers and sheriff's deputies chased the SUV for a short time, but according to police, lost the SUV in a neighborhood. The SUV was equipped with OnStar tracking technology.

Officers were able to track the SUV's location with the help of OnStar. Police said the SUV ended up with flat tires when it clipped another vehicle after going through a stop sign. Police say Gaide continued driving to an apartment complex parking lot, where he ran from the SUV. An officer chased Gaide, then used a Taser on him when he wouldn't comply with commands, police said.

Gaide is also suspected of robbing Bluffs Wine and Liquors in Colorado Springs on Tuesday. The clerk was stabbed and the knife broke off in the victim's chest. The clerk has significant injuries, but is expected to recover.
