Auraria Campus Addresses Rash Of Violent Crimes

Students, Parents Express Security Concerns

POSTED: 4:15 pm MST March 10, 2010

A series of stabbings, assaults and robberies on the Auraria campus has students on edge.

To address the recent rash of violent crime, the school held a town hall safety meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the crimes were not related, but they did happen back-to-back, and everyone is taking notice.

Campus police and Denver police are investigating three attacks in less than a week.

"When I saw those three news feeds, it kind of scared me because I thought that could be me or anybody," said student Natalie Orrell.

Students, faculty and staff attended the safety meeting to find out what is being done.

"I think they need to do more with talking with students about preventing these things rather than talking about what happens after," said student Melanie Gutteea.

Other problems with campus security came to light.

Charlis Tharp's daughter is a freshman attending classes on the campus.

"She called the night rider service last night to pick her up at 6:30. They did not show," said Tharp. "So, she had to walk across campus by herself."

Police Chief John Mackey was listening.

"It's very concerning to me that we had a call come out and your daughter did not have anyone to come assist her," said Mackey.

Police now say the stabbing at The Auraria Inn apartments was not random. Two people have been arrested in connection with the stabbing.

Two other attacks remain unsolved. In one, a student was robbed and assaulted in the Campus Village parking lot. In the other, a woman was grabbed and punched in an attempted campus purse-snatching.

"These are isolated incidents. This is not a regular event on this campus, nor would we ever allow it to be," said Mackey.

Campus housing groups are increasing their security measures.

The Inn at Auraria is now locking its back door and requiring guests to sign in.

Campus police say any time students need a ride -- call the night rider service or police.

Police also are investigating an attack that happened Feb. 16, also at the Inn at Auraria apartments where a student was robbed and punched in the face.

Police haven't identified a suspect.

Police and school officials reminded students about emergency phones on campus and basic safety tips, such as being aware of surroundings and walking in groups.
