Ritter Back At Capitol After Bike Accident

Governor Holds First News Conference Since Mishap

POSTED: 4:13 pm MST March 10, 2010

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter held his first news conference after his bike accident last week and said he's still in pain, but recovering.

The governor signed 28 bills on Wednesday, most of them to fix this year's budget. He also met with his staff at the Capitol.

Ritter said he expected to resume his full schedule next week.

"I was aware, I was aware, and talked to the ambulance driver because just as governor I think it is really important that people are aware if, in fact, at any time that I am incapacitated," said Ritter.

Ritter was one of five people bicycling at 23rd Avenue and High Street on March 2 when his front wheel hit the rear wheel of a bicyclist ahead of him.

"My chief of staff was alerted, very quickly and throughout the process I was awake and alert throughout all of the x-rays and procedures that happened," said Ritter.

Ritter will be working many hours from home. He says thanks to technology, he can still manage the state.

"I still feel like I'm working on the issues happening in this building," said Ritter.

Both Ritter and the bicyclist in front "came down" and Ritter, who was wearing a helmet, hit his head in addition to suffering broken ribs and a separated shoulder.

Another cyclist, riding behind the governor, also fell and suffered a wrist injury, his spokesman said.
