Surprise Guilty Plea In Shooting Death Of 2-Year-Old

Earl Ryan Ends Trial With Admission

POSTED: 2:59 pm MST March 10, 2010

A man accused of shooting and killing a 2-year-old boy in 2008 unexpectedly pleaded guilty in connection with the case Wednesday, just as his trial was getting underway in Denver District Court.

Earl Ryan, 41, pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death and second-degree assault. In exchange for his guilty plea, charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault were dismissed.

On Oct. 12, 2008, Denver Police responded to the 1200 block of Madison Street on a report of a shooting. The police investigation showed that Ryan had fired shots that injured 30-year-old Thomas Crookham and killed his 2-year-old son, Noah Crookham. Thomas Crookham was running away from Ryan, holding his son, when a single bullet from a 357 magnum pistol went through Crookham's hand and into his son's back.

Ryan was arrested after a 2½ hour standoff with Denver Police.

"I am sorry. I did not mean to shoot anyone. I am sorry. Tell them that I am sorry," Ryan said, according to a police statement.

Ryan faces up to 28 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections when he is sentenced on May 4.
