Aurora police are looking for suspected police impersonator who pulled over a driver on Wednesday afternoon and aimed a gun at him.

When the driver noticed that the "officer" didn't have a real police patch on his uniform, he lunged at the imposter, who fled in a white Dodge Durango.

The incident happened at about 12:46 p.m., near Hampden and Espana, Aurora police said.

The victim told detectives that when he heard a siren behind him and saw red and blue lights flashing on a white vehicle, he pulled his car to the side of the road. The suspect then walked up to the driver's window and asked for his license, registration, insurance and car keys. The police impersonator then walked back to his vehicle with the items and sat for some time, said Aurora police detective Rudy Herrera.

When he returned to the driver, the suspect had his gun drawn and ordered the driver out.

As he was getting out of the car, the driver saw that the suspect's shoulder pad read "Special Police, Bounty Hunter, CO." When the suspect started putting away his gun, the driver lunged. The suspect ran to his Durango and fled.

The police impersonator was described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, about 180 pounds, and between 28 and 30 years old. He was wearing a light blue security shirt with security patches, dark blue pants with a yellow strip down the side, a duty belt and a "brown Smoky the Bear-type trooper hat" with a gold band, Herrera said.

He was driving a 1999 or 2000 white Durango with black push bars in the front. The license plate was gray and white. Anyone with more information is asked to call the Aurora Police Department at (303) 365-2844.

There have been a series of reported police impersonators pulling over drivers in Denver. It is not known if this latest incident is related to the others.
