Thornton Police Shoot, Kill Suspected Burglar

Police Say Man Had Large Hunting Knife

UPDATED: 4:47 pm MST March 10, 2010

Thornton police shot and killed a man suspected of breaking into a home and damaging several items Wednesday morning.

Police said they were called to a home at 116th and Steele Street at about 3:45 a.m. on a report of a burglary in progress. The homeowner said a roommate had broken in, was destroying the house and had stolen a van, said Matt Barnes of the Thornton Police Department.

When officers arrived, the man had left. About 10 minutes later police received a call about a van on fire at a nearby King Soopers. Witnesses told police they saw a man with a large hunting knife strapped to his leg leave the parking lot, Barnes said.

Several minutes later, the man returned to the home on Steele Street and confronted police, he said.

Officers gave the man several commands, which he did not obey. The man unsnapped his knife from his belt and that's when one officer shot him with a Taser gun and another officer shot him with a handgun, Barnes said.

The man was taken to St. Anthony's hospital and has since died of his wounds. Police identified him as Clinton Mason, 45, of Thornton.

The officer who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave -- which is standard police procedure.

The homeowner was not injured and is being questioned by police.
