LITTLETON, Colo. -- Littleton Police are looking for two suspected car thieves whose photographs were snapped when they blew through a red light in a stolen vehicle. In the picture, a male driver and passenger are seen cruising through a red light in Littleton, in a car that belongs to a man who wanted to be called “James.”Police believe the men stole James’ car from an RTD Park-n-Ride and used it to drive around breaking into cars at other Park-n-Rides.
The suspects, wearing hoodies and dark clothing, were virtually unidentifiable. Police believe they hit several cars, breaking windows and stealing items like GPS devices from park and rides and Arapahoe Community College. Then, the men made one crucial mistake.“The fellow who had stolen the car ran a red light and had his picture taken,” said James. The red light enforcement photograph, along with a $75 ticket, came in the mail two weeks after James’ car was stolen. The photograph is crystal clear -- two men, a passenger and driver, are cruising through a red light in James’ vehicle.“It’s really a matter of chance that this happened,” said James.Police said it may be the lucky break they’ve been looking for.“This really is one of those fortunate incidents where we hope to make an identification and get a break in the case that we normally wouldn’t have,” said Littleton Police spokeswoman Kim Steen.James got his car back and will not have to pay the ticket. He said the incident is a wake-up call. He has had his car broken into twice at area Park-n-Rrides and said they need more cameras and better security.Steen said drivers should never leave valuables in their car and urged anyone who can identify the suspects to call Littleton Police at 303-795-3884.
