As evidence of that, the body of yet another cat has been found mutilated, animal control officers said Tuesday. It is the third such mutilation discovered in Aurora in the past 10 days.

The remains of the 12-year-old neutered and declawed male cat was found near the intersection of Yale Avenue and Peoria Street. The feline was last seen by his owner 5 1/2 hours before his body was found.

Other details of the investigation have not been disclosed but it appears to be linked to the recent spate of cat mutilations in the area, 7NEWS reported.

Two cats were found June 6. One was in Centennial and one was in Aurora. Another mutilated cat was found in Aurora on June 10. The two cats mutilated recently in Aurora were found in the area of South Peoria and Yale Avenue.

Last year, nine cats were mutilated and dumped in Aurora and were found an area along South Peoria Street, from Mississippi Avenue to Cornell Avenue. Those mutilations stopped last November.

Investigators are not saying if this year's and last year's mutilation cases are related.

A $12,000 reward is being offered for information leading up to the arrest of the person or people responsible.

In the meantime, the Animal Care Division strongly recommends that cats be kept indoors.

Residents in Aurora and Centennial are asked to keep their eyes and ears open, both day and night, and to report any suspicious activity to the police department at (303) 344-2455.
