DENVER -- Denver police are investigating how a 15-year-old mentally handicapped girl was bound and placed in a closet next to her bedroom, 7NEWS reported.
The address where she was found, in the 2400 block of South Newberry Street, is designated as a foster care home.
Detective Teresa Garcia said Tuesday that a Jefferson County
caseworker visiting the home last Thursday found the girl in soft
bindings that restricted her movement. The closet where the girl
was found was next to her bedroom, Garcia said.
There were no indications of other abuse or neglect, and the
girl appeared well-fed, Garcia said.
The girl has been removed from the home, which also housed
several other foster children. Garcia did not know how many other
children live there, and did not know whether any had been treated
similarly.
Child-abuse detectives are investigating, Garcia said. She
declined to identify the people who live in the home.
She said the girl was returned to the custody of Jefferson
County Human Services. Spokeswoman Jennifer Watson said the agency
typically places children in foster homes outside the county when
no homes are available in Jefferson County or when a child has
specific needs that can be met only outside the county.
