Electronic Billboards Up For Debate In Denver

City Council May Ban Electronic Displays

Denver may be a big city, but some people say it doesn’t need the bright lights. Right now, there’s a push to ban electronic “LED” billboards.

One group leading the opposition is the environmental awareness organization, Scenic Colorado.

"This isn't Vegas. This isn't New York,” said Miles Davies, an officer with Scenic Colorado.

"You know, we've got a lot of blue sky, we don't want to obstruct it" said Davies.

Among the concerns by environmental and neighborhood groups: the signs generate light pollution and use too much energy.

Some say they're just plain distracting.

"It takes your eyes away from the road and up to the billboard," said one driver.

But those behind the signs say the electronic billboards are no brighter than a traditional sign.

"Digital displays can be regulated so they are not a nuisance and in fact can be beneficial to the public and local businesses,” said Frank Bullock of Lamar Denver.

"We’ve had one in service for over a year and have not received any complaints,” said Bullock.

The next step in this debate will take place Monday night.

The Denver City Council will hold a public hearing and is then expected to take a vote.
