JEFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Friday was a chance for students to get a look at the school where two of their own were gunned down Tuesday.Deer Creek Middle School was the scene of an open house, with 20 mental health professionals on hand to help everyone regain a sense of normalcy."To get on a bus. To hear the school bell. Some of those things can be triggers and can be re-traumatizing. And so, what we're really working on today is comfort level," said Vivian Johnston, one of the counselors. "Our security was breached. Our comfort was breached. And now we're about to take that back and go back to teaching and learning."
Students signed cards for their injured classmates as well.Monday, each classroom will have a counselor and the teacher will read one consistent statement, Johnston said. Then, they will try to concentrate on daily routines."I think teachers will be really amazed that, come Monday, there will be a lot of teaching and learning going on. It will be a relief to the children and to the adults," Johnston said."I was just kind of nervous. I was glad to see my friends though because that always helps. And then, I wanted to see my teachers," said Emma Crozier, a Deer Creek student."She was here when it happened and in lockdown. And so that was hard. It was good to come back today to get that first step," said Julie Crozier, Emma's mom. "This will be the safest place on earth for the next few weeks, for sure."In fact, Johnston said the school will have an armed security guard at the front of the school for the remainder of the school year.
