JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Deer Creek Middle School will have a counselor in every classroom for the entire day Monday, their first day back at school since Tuesday’s shooting.Class was back in session today at Stony Creek Elementary school where Deer Creek students had to be evacuated during the shooting.Friday, the middle school will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will give students a chance to pick up their belongings and be in the school together for the first time.
Meanwhile, mental health professionals are talking to teachers and staff about how to work with students. “On Monday and the first time you see your kids, we want you to use this rule of thumb, listen, listen, listen, and when you’re really tired, listen some more,” said Vivian Johnston, a student services coordinator. “We’ll just continue to watch and be aware and begin to move to the sidelines to allow schools to go back to teaching and learning, because that’s really what they want to do.”She said more than 300 people came to a counseling session Wednesday at Stony Creek Elementary school, and they held another session today.
