Deer Creek Shooting Social Media Fact Vs. Fiction

Facebook Posts, Text Messages Following Shooting Provide Firsthand Detail, Misinformation

POSTED: 6:20 pm MST February 24, 2010

When you read information posted on social networking sites, how do you know it's true? Dozens of students turned to Facebook in the moments after Tuesday's shooting at Deer Creek Middle School.

"I don't really like calling people. It's easier to type for me," said Anna Stolle, a Deer Creek seventh-grader who witnessed the shooting. "I went on Facebook and then I posted that there was a Deer Creek shooting at my school."

"We just heard gunshots, a lot of people just started crying, a lot of people were calling their friends and family, it was chaos," said Deer Creek seventh-grader Alexis Herrera.

"It was scary," said Deer Creek seventh-grader Kryston Otighe.

The three friends saw the shooting, then went home and talked online. They updated each other on what they knew, while also searching for new information. Some of what they found was firsthand and accurate, while other postings provided misinformation.

"I saw that someone said that someone said that a teacher got shot," said Anna.

"There was a little bit of misinformation, but it wasn't really anybody's fault. They heard something and then another person heard it, and then it changed," said Anna's mom, Mary Stolle. "We're human, and it's sometimes going to be accurate and it's sometimes not going to be accurate."

"As soon as we get a false message, our communications department can update and say 'no, here's the accurate information,'" said Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson.

Wednesday morning, Jefferson County Schools sent out an e-mail to parents because of concerns of misleading social media information and text messages from students.

"Things like, 'well, this school is the next school' or something like that," said Stevenson.

The following is the letter sent to Jefferson County Schools parents Wednesday morning:

This is an important message from Jeffco Public Schools about the shooting today at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton Colorado.

The suspect involved in today’s shooting is in police custody and the two students who were injured do not have life-threatening injuries.

There are many rumors circulating on social media about other threats of violence at Jeffco schools. There are no reports of any other incidents of violence at other schools today.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about making sure information is factual on social media and other information sites.

There will be counselors at Stony Creek Elementary tomorrow who will be available for students who need mental health support.

This message followed an original message sent to parents shortly after the shooting.

"We did an immediate message [Tuesday] afternoon that said 'yes, we had a shooting at Deer Creek, we had police on site, the shooter had been apprehended, there was no current danger to kids,'" said Stevenson.

Stevenson told 7News about a Deer Creek student who was texting about the shooting. She says the student accidentally sent the text before the student was done writing, making the situation seem worse than it was.

"She actually had a new phone and had only gotten half her message done and really did not mean any ill-intent, but once you send out a message, then of course other kids forward it and it's viral," said Stevenson.

As for Facebook, it remains popular for the Deer Creek shooting, if only to join the "Dr David Benke is a Hero!" page. When 7News first showed you the page just before 6:00 p.m. Tuesday it had just nine members. Twnety-four hours later, it had more than 25,000 members. Other pages have started asking students to join to show support or to talk about what happened.

"I don't think people should put stuff on Facebook unless they're absolutely sure that it's true," said Alexis.
