Loveland Pass Snowboarders Survive Avalanche

Second Avalanche Near Aspen Injures Skier

Two snowboarders riding near 11,990-foot Loveland Pass survived an avalanche that covered part of U.S. 6 on Sunday.

Summit County sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy LeClair said one snowboarder escaped the slide that partially buried another Sunday afternoon.

The slide happened in a backcountry area between the pass and nearby Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, along U.S. 6 that winds through the area.

The highway was closed temporarily so highway crews could remove snow from the avalanche that spilled onto the road. LeClair said both snowboarders left the area before emergency crews arrived.

A cross-country skier was rescued at about 2:30 a.m. Monday, after he was caught in an avalanche Sunday on the north side of Mount Yeckel, 15 miles northwest of Aspen. Keith R. McCulloch, of Buena Vista, Colo., was swept into a grove of trees by a slide, breaking one of his legs, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office..

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center's Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Monday said "conditions are primed for human-triggered avalanches" this week.
