CU Students Attempting 1,000 Mile Per Gallon Car

Fuel Efficient Car Will Compete In Eco-Marathon

The age of gas guzzlers is over, and a team of local students wants to make sure they stay in the grave.

Five mechanical engineering students from CU-Boulder formed a team called "CU Later 2" and are working on an extreme fuel efficient car.

The team's goal is to reach 1,000 miles per gallon. In order to reach that lofty milestone, many sacrifices had to be made.

The car isn't designed to be a regular family car. It only weighs 110 pounds, has one seat, and has no air conditioning.

"It gets upwards of well over 100 degrees inside the vehicle. The driver's soaking wet after he gets out," said Team Spokesman Andrew Wetzig.

Despite the lack of climate control, the team said some of the car's technology could someday be transferred to more standard vehicles.

"It's the type of principles that you look for in this car and continual optimization that lead to breakthroughs in the automotive industry," said Project Manager Danny Cohn.

Cohn said the secret to the car's fuel-efficiency is having an aerodynamic body and reducing friction in the drivetrain and the wheels.

CU Later 2 will compete in a nationwide contest next month in Houston, Texas called the Shell Eco-Marathon.

The challenge is to get the car to go as far as possible on as little fuel as possible.

The record is 2,843 miles per gallon, set two years ago by a high school in Indiana.
