DURANGO, Colo. -- The Durango Police Department has partnered with the National Police Dog Foundation to establish a police K-9 program in the city, officials said Tuesday.Police service dogs can assist not only in suspect apprehension, but also assist finding lost children, missing persons and illegal substances such as narcotics and explosives.Chief David Felice said a local K-9 program would act as a "force multiplier" for improving response times and police coverage.
"A single dog greatly extends our ability to respond to community needs," Felice said. The cost of obtaining a police dog typically exceeds $8,000, not including ongoing veterinary care, maintenance training, food and care. The National Police Dog Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1998 to raise funds to launch and support police K-9 programs across the country.
