DENVER -- The sentencing for a Denver woman who pleaded guilty to child abuse and cruelty to animal charges was postponed until June 20.
Mary Flanagan, 50, was charged after a 13-year-old mentally disabled girl was apparently found living amongst dead animals, urine and feces on Jan. 26.
A process server who was trying to serve legal papers to someone in the home that Sunday, peeked in the window when no one answered the door nd noticed piles and piles of garbage in the house. He notified authorities.
When inspectors went inside the house on the 4800 block of S. Hoyt Street, the smell was so foul that respirators were needed.
The 13-year-old adopted daughter was taken into custody and placed in foster care.
Twelve poodles, Pomeranians and cairn terriers as well as six cats were taken from the home. Animal control officers said one dog had to be euthanized.
The skeletal remains of nine dogs and a cat were in pet carriers in a living area where the girl was watching TV, said a spokesman with Denver animal control.
Residents nearby said Flanagan's house had long been a neighborhood blight.
