Children Get High By Eating Food

Children Accidentally Consume Marijuana Laced Products

It’s a frightening situation that has emergency room doctors and marijuana dispensary owners very concerned.

The treats are tempting. Cookies, brownies, ice cream and even trail mix -- all laced with marijuana.

But in some cases, children are accidentally consuming these cannabis creations, intended only for their parents.

"Children can become very sleepy or even have to be admitted to the hospital," said Dr. Eric Lavonas of the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center.

No one is keeping specific stats, but ER doctors say it’s happening.

"The more marijuana we see in our community, the more problems we're going to see with children getting into it," said Dr. Lavonas.

"This is common sense to most of us, we're here talking about it today, it needs to be aired," said Erik Santus of Lotus Medical in LoDo.

The items can’t be purchased at a grocery store. You have to have a license to buy the products at a dispensary.

The products are popular especially among cancer patients because the release is gradual and you don’t have to smoke it.
