Authorities confirmed Tuesday that the body of a Colorado Springs freelance photographer missing since Haiti's magnitude 7 earthquake has been recovered.

"The remains of David Hames were identified by the State Department this morning, and Renee and her boys are grieving the loss of their husband and father," Melanie Dobson, a family spokeswoman, said in a statement. She referred to Hames' wife, Renee, and the couple's two young sons, Aidan and Zander.

"We know that our dear brother and friend is in heaven, but even so, Renee is grieving the loss of the man she loved with all her heart," Dobson said.

"Thank you for your continued prayers and support," Dobson said. The family will soon announce the timing of a memorial service for Hames at Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs.

David Hames was working with Compassion International in Haiti as a photographer when the quake hit the Hotel Montana, where he was staying in.

Hames' colleague, Dan Woolley, also of Colorado Springs, was rescued from an elevator shaft at the hotel three days after the Jan. 12 quake.

Officials have said they believe there were 100 bodies entombed in the ruins of the Montana, which was a top hotel for Westerners. Many likely died in the gym and at the bar, having just returned from work when the earthquake struck.
