Begging Porcupine Relocated From Ski Resort

'Stickers' Drew Crowds Begging For Food At Telluride

"Stickers," the porcupine who has been begging skiers and snowboarders for food at the Telluride Ski Resort, is moving to a new home.

The porcupine was relocated Wednesday morning and will be sent "to a more desirable location," according to the Telluride Ski Resort. It's possible Stickers will end up near Woods Lake, living among his fellow porcupines.

This is the second ski season Stickers has been begging for handouts. He has confronted so many skiers that the ski patrol erected a warning sign that says "Caution: leaping attack porcupine."

Because porcupines have very bad eyesight, Stickers had been mistaking fingers for food.

"Unfortunately, this is a direct result of people feeding wildlife, and now Stickers is always waiting for that next morsel of food," said Jeff Proteau, vice president of mountain operations for the resort. "He is now habituated to humans, and this is not a good thing."

Stickers' antics also were captured on video and posted on YouTube.

Wildlife officials felt the porcupine would fare much better in natural surroundings. Stickers was comfortable in a cage during the relocation process, munching on peanut butter and granola. Scott Speilman, an officer with the U.S. Forest Service, has been monitoring Stickers and said he is "doing very well,"

"We hate to see Stickers go," said CEO Dave Riley. "But this was the responsible thing to do for the porcupine. We want to ensure a happy life for Stickers in the wild."
