GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A Los Angeles man was arrested in Grand Junction after narcotics officers checking a Greyhound bus sniffed out a perfume-scented suitcase and found 34 pounds of marijuana, authorities said.

Ezell Pounds Jr., 39, was arrested on charges of felony drug trafficking Wednesday on the bus traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago, according to a Mesa County deputy's statement supporting his arrest warrant.

Two members of the Colorado Drug Task Force were routinely inspecting baggage on the bus making a service stop at the Greyhound station when they identified a black bag that was unusually heavy and had a perfumed aroma, the arrest affidavit stated.

The narcotics officer wrote that perfume is often used to mask the odor of drugs in a bid to throw off drug-detecting dogs.

A baggage claim tag identified the suitcase's owner as Antar Washington, a passenger traveling to Minneapolis, the statement said.

Antar Washington turned out to be Pounds, who denied any wrongdoing when the deputy asked if he was carrying "drugs, weapons or large amounts of money," the arrested affidavit said. The officers said he voluntarily let them to search his bag.

Inside, they found 29 vacuum-sealed bags of pot, the affidavit said.

Pounds was being held in the Mesa County jail without bond.
