FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A Colorado gun lobby is threatening legal action against the Colorado State University System for its proposal to ban weapons from its Fort Collins and Pueblo campuses. The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners group said university officials have not shown that banning guns on campuses would improve public safety and that Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden is joining them in opposing the proposal.Without elaborating, Alderden on Monday confirmed his position to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
Colorado State University is one of the sole public universities that permits people to carry concealed weapons on its campuses.RMGO spokesman Ray Hickman said CSU has failed to show any real evidence that banning guns improves safety. "What's not broken doesn't need fixing," Hickman told the Coloradoan. "Their policy is way too broad."The CSU ban would extend to people who have concealed weapons permits but also would apply to pellet guns and Tasers. The draft, issued Jan. 20, provides exemptions for certified law enforcement officers, military personnel and ROTC drill teams. It also allows the CSU police chief to grant exemptions for educational purposes and to people who face a serious threat, if they have a concealed-carry permit. It would allow the CSU police to store weapons for employees, students and visitors.CSU officials said suggestions on the policy's definitions, exemptions, storage plans and timelines will be accepted through Jan. 29.The CSU System Board of Governors will consider the final draft at a meeting in Pueblo in February.
