DENVER -- There’s a good possibility that your taxes could be going up in Colorado. The taxes may be on things you may least expect, including some items that you buy online. In an effort to bring in more money to Colorado, there's a move to start beefing up enforcement on tax collections from online purchases.
"I guess I could go either way on it. I understand the reasoning behind them wanting to do something like that,” said one online shopper. As in many states, the monitoring of those collections hasn't been so stringent. But the Governor estimated that it will bring in $5 million dollars in new revenue. One critic said the fees and reinstating taxes are not the answer, suggesting the governor needs to think out of the box."Look what Government does and if there's a government service that can be done better in the private sector, contract that out in the bidding process,” said Jon Caldara of the Independence Institute. The governor insists he is doing all he can to balance the tight budget. In a recent interview with 7News, Governor Ritter’s spokesperson, George Merritt said the budget has been trimmed as much as possible. Merritt described the cuts and proposed moves as “painful."In the end, state lawmakers will have the final say.
