DENVER -- The fight over medical marijuana is about to officially begin at the state Capitol. Sen. Chris Romer introduced a bill Wednesday that would bar dispensaries from paying doctors to clear people to become medical marijuana consumers. The measure -- Senate Bill 109 -- would require that doctors give patients a physical exam and review a person's medical history before recommending that they be added to the state's list of approved medical marijuana users.
Lawmakers have been talking for months about how to regulate the state's booming medical marijuana industry, but this is the first bill to be introduced. In the House, Rep. Tom Massey is also working on a bill that could limit the number of people marijuana providers are allowed to supply. 7News spoke to one patient who feels the exam is merely a way for the state to increase revenue. "They just want more money for me to be prescribed medical marijuana," Kaylin Heffernen told 7News. Many owners say they feel regulation is necessary, but feels the state needs to redirect its efforts. "Where does this stuff come from? There's so much concern about outside cartels," said Bob Carleton of the Highlands Herbal Connection in an interview with 7News.
