A hunter shot a mountain lion believed to have mauled a family dog near Lake City, Colo.

The dog was attacked Jan. 11. She survived.

Four days later, a licensed hunter spotted the mountain lion about four miles from the family's home.

The hunter, Jim Higgins, told the Grand Junction Sentinel newspaper the lion appeared to be 3 years old, was famished and in poor health.

The newspaper reported the mountain lion had a distinctive marking on its tail similar to the animal that attacked the dog.

Another family dog was killed Jan. 7 about 18 miles from Lake City.
