AFA Leadership Reacts To Cadet Operating Porn Site
A 7NEWS Investigates Story Aired May 2, 2003
The new leadership at the Air Force Academy is facing enormous challenges. It has to mitigate the rape scandal uncovered by 7NEWS Investigates and now there's a 7NEWS report on the senior cadet running an Internet porn site.
What may be different this time around is the way in which these issues are handled.
When 7NEWS Investigates first approached the academy officials for an interview with then Superintendent Gen. John Dallagher about sexual assaults at the Air Force Academy, we were told that the issue wasn't important enough to warrant his time.
Then the scandal exploded into a national story.
But when 7NEWS Investigates approached academy officials about one of its cadets participating in group sex through his own online enterprise he was operating from the academy, acting Superintendent Brig. Gen. John Weida immediately agreed to meet.
"I want to thank Channel 7 for bringing this information to light," Weida said.
And when he found out the substance of the allegations, he was not shy and took personal control of the crisis.
"We will look at this cadet, those associated with this cadet. We'll look at the training we gave that cadet. We'll look at how we failed. And why he chose to do what he did," Weida said.
Weida said that the academy also failed the cadet. Clearly, that is his concept of leadership -- that on a team, everyone wins or everyone loses, 7NEWS Investigative Reporter John Ferrugia said.
"We make our team aware that when you have information that comes to light that reflects unfavorably on our team, or could open up an individual to being coerced by our enemy, you have to bring that forward," Weida said.
Weida said the academy's investigation will be complete within two weeks and 7NEWS will keep you up to date as this important story continues to unfold.
