UPDATED: 6:34 am MST January 6, 2010

A police-involved altercation shut down northbound Interstate 25 between Colorado and University boulevards for several hours on Tuesday night.

Denver police said they received a call of an accident and arrived to find a man running across the interstate.

The officers made contact with the man, and he become very combative with officers, police said. Officers then deployed “less than lethal” weapons to subdue the man. It wasn't clear what type of weapon was used.

The man had trouble breathing and was taken to a hospital. He reportedly has begun breathing on his own again.

The incident was under investigation. I-25 reopened at about 8:45 p.m.
