Arapahoe County Man Shot By Deputy

Armed Man Reportedly Held His Parents Hostage

POSTED: 10:26 am MST January 5, 2010

An Arapahoe County deputy shot and wounded a barricaded man Tuesday morning in an unincorporated section of the county.

Deputies and a Colorado State Patrol trooper went to the home at 77 South Tom Bay Road at 7:11 a.m. on a report of a barricaded man. The man who called 911 said he and his wife had been held hostage through the night by their adult son, officials said. The man was able to escape, but he told deputies his wife was still inside the home.

Once there, the deputy and the trooper were confronted outside by a man who was armed with a weapon, according to a press release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. The man "refused to obey command and aggressively attacked the Arapahoe County deputy," according to the press release.

The man, Danny Barber, 45, was shot during the confrontation and taken to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries were described as "not life threatening."

The shooting is under investigation by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Team. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
