Pueblo Deputies Led On Two Separate Chases

Sheriff's Office Arrests Two After High-Speed Pursuits

UPDATED: 8:00 am MST January 3, 2010

Pueblo deputies were busy with two separate chases that resulted in two arrests on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office arrested Ryan Childress after he allegedly led officers on a chase for nearly four miles in Pueblo West on Friday night.

Pueblo Sheriff spokeswoman Laurie Kilpatrick said officers received a 911 call about a domestic violence incident. The caller also informed deputies that Childress was intoxicated and drove off.

Pueblo deputies found Childress a few miles away, but say he refused to stop. Kilpatrick said officers determined Childress to be a safety hazard and performed a pit maneuver on the car.

Kilpatrick said after the car came to a stop and deputies began approaching the vehicle, Childress took off again. However he didn't make it far as he high-centered the car on a dirt berm and then rolled over into a ditch.

Childress was booked into Pueblo County Jail on a felony count of vehicular eluding, as well as reckless driving, DUI and domestic violence.

Pueblo deputies were in another chase a few hours later after receiving a report of a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood. The vehicle and occupants matched the description of possible homicide suspects out of Colorado Springs.

As a deputy approached the SUV, the Sheriff's Office said Michael Davis jumped from the rear passenger seat into the driver's seat and took off, nearly running over an officer.

Kilpatrick said the pursuit nearly reached 70 mph and officers attempted a pit maneuver again. As deputies approached the stopped vehicle, Davis allegedly took off again, sideswiping a patrol vehicle and nearly running over Sgt. Dave Black again.

Kilpatrick said Davis hit two more sheriff vehicles during the chase before deputies forced the SUV from the road and Davis crashed into a tree.

Kilpatrick said Davis told authorities he ran from law enforcement officers because he had two outstanding warrants.

Davis was booked into Pueblo County Jail with attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault on a peace officer and vehicular eluding - all felony charges. He already had warrants for dangerous drug possession and failure to appear on a traffic office against him.
