LARAMIE, Wyo. -- A Brighton man suspected of kidnapping his ex-fiance was killed in a shootout with Fort Collins police Friday.Dennis Cox was suspected of kidnapping his ex-fiance, Julie Ann Kilgore, Tuesday afternoon and holding her at gunpoint in a Laramie hotel. Kilgore was found alive in the Wyoming hotel on New Year's morning, Laramie police said Friday.Laramie police had issued a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert for Cox, who was wanted on a kidnapping warrant. They also placed automated phone calls to people living in the area, warning them about Cox, who was believed to be armed with a .45-caliber gun and a Taser gun.
Police encountered Cox in downtown Fort Collins around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at a Greyhound bus station located at 243 North College Ave, said Fort Collins police spokeswoman Rita Davis. Davis said the shooting began when three officers saw a man who matched the description of the kidnapping suspect. The suspect pointed a gun at the officers and the officers shot the suspect, Davis said. It's not clear how many shots were fired and how many times Cox was hit. No officers were hurt. The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave as police investigate the shooting. He was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Friday night.Laramie police Comm. Mitchell Cushman said Kilgore appears to be physically OK, but was temporarily hospitalized at Ivinson Memorial Hospital as a precaution.Kilgore was found after Laramie police received a call from a clerk at the Ramada Inn stating she had the Colorado kidnapping victim there with her. When Laramie officers arrived at the motel at 9:51 a.m. Friday, they found Kilgore hiding underneath a desk in the motel office, Cushman said.Cox had fled. The vehicle Cox had been driving, a tan 1993 Ford Taurus, was found in downtown Laramie, Cushman said.Kilgore and Cox had checked into the motel on New Year's Eve.Police said Cox, who has a history of assault, menacing and kidnapping, forced Kilgore from her Brighton home. She told her family she would be back in 15 minutes, and was never heard from again. Kilgore's vehicle was later discovered in the parking lot of a nearby shopping center.Kilgore is a nurse at Platte Valley Medical Center. Her family said she had just ended a relationship with Cox. They had dated in high school, lost touch and then reconnected at a class reunion. Her family said he was a trusted member of the family -- they went camping together, and hung out -- and they never suspected he would be capable of something like kidnapping. After Kilgore checked out at the hospital Friday night, she headed back toward Brighton, to be reunited with her family, Brighton police spokesman John Bradley said.
