UPDATED: 4:38 pm MST December 31, 2009
DENVER -- Happy New Year! As 2010 approaches, this evening’s celebration will be chilly. If you are planning to see the fireworks downtown, you'd better bundle up because temperatures will be in the teens and 20s Thursday night.Expect increasing clouds throughout the night with breezy conditions in the foothills and a few flurries lingering for the mountains.Skies will clear just in time for the rare lunar occurrence Thursday evening. There will be a full moon on New Year's Eve and because it's the second full moon of the month, it's called a blue moon. The moon will rise with the sunset at 4:43 p.m. The last blue moon on New Year's Eve was on December 31, 1990.
Tomorrow 2010 starts off warmer than what the metro area has seen. For the past week, temperatures struggled to surpass freezing. The forecasted high for Denver tomorrow is 41. The Front Range will be dry through the weekend with off and on snow showers for the mountains.Although the plains will be dry, the mountains will see some heavier snow. A WINTER STORM WATCH is in effect for the mountains of Northwest Colorado from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. Accumulations are expected to be around a 12-14 inches for areas such as Elkhead and Park Mountains. While we get a slight break in the wintry weather, it's a good time to check your vehicle for supplies in case you get stuck in snow. The basic necessities include flashlights and extra batteries, nonperishable food like granola or candy bars, blankets, waterproof clothing, extra wool caps and gloves, snow shovel and an extra ice scraper, an extra battery for your cell phone and drinking water.
