DENVER -- At the height of the holiday travel season, the Food and Drug Administration has cited a major airline food services company for unsanitary conditions in its Denver facility. An October inspection found roaches in the silverware area, employees handling food without washing their hands, and the pathogen Listeria in the floor of the kitchen at the LSG SkyChefs facility near Denver International Airport. No passengers have been reported sick, but the company is the world's largest in-flight services provider.
A warning letter issued Dec. 10 from the FDA reports too many roaches to count in the cart wash area, and samples of the floor in the kitchen tested positive for Listeria, which can cause food-borne illnesses."Honestly, we make no excuses," said Beth Van Duyne, a spokeswoman for LSG Skychefs. "This is not the standard that we have had in place in our 75 year company history. This happened back in October at which point we took immediate action and eradicated the issues that surrounded this report."She said the Listeria was found from a drain in the floor and that the company has replaced the pipes. The facility will have a re-inspection in January, and she said she is positive it will pass.
