DENVER -- The crime sprees of two alleged bank robbers have come to an end.The FBI said Tuesday that they have caught two suspects responsible for eight bank robberies in the metro area.Authorities said they have caught the Crooked Lid Bandit, whom they believe is Paul Walker. Walker has admitted to holding up the same two banks several times over the year. He even robbed the same two banks on the same day, the FBI said.
Specifically: US Bank at 950 17th Street in Denver -- Feb. 27 US Bank at 950 17th Street in Denver -- March 17 Chase Bank at 1125 17th Street in Denver -- March 17 Chase Bank at 1125 17th Street in Denver -- Dec. 18 Chase Bank at 1125 17th Street in Denver -- Dec. 23Walker was arrested over the weekend after someone called to report a man acting suspicious near the bus stop at Colfax Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Officers soon learned that Walker had an outstanding warrant for trespassing and was arrested."Without the help ... we probably would've had a more difficult time catching them," said Dave Joly, FBI spokesman. "It's hard for us to catch a single bank robber who only robs one bank. But when you do it multiple times our odds increase."Walker mentioned to the arresting officer that he had committed a bank robbery and wanted to speak to an investigator, Joly said. An FBI Safe Street's Task Force investigator visited Walker in the Denver City Jail and interviewed him. During the interview, Walker confessed to committing five bank robberies in the Denver metro area."Our primary concern is for the safety and security of our employees and customers. As such, we are glad to hear that the authorities believe they have apprehended the person suspected of robbing local banks," wrote Gary Kishner, with Chase Media Relations in Los Angeles. The FBI has also arrested John Kirby of Westminster, who was taken into custody after his last suspected bank robbery on Monday.Joly said multiple anonymous tips received by Crime Stoppers led them to Kirby. While agents were investigating these leads, Kirby committed a bank robbery at the Bank of the West at 5805 Carr Street in Arvada, a bank he had hit before, the FBI said."They found him, initiated a traffic stop several hours after the robbery and put him into custody," Joly said. From that surveillance video on Monday's robbery, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force identified Kirby, where he lived and the vehicle he used in the robberies.Kirby has confessed to the three bank robberies listed below:Bank of the West at 9150 N Sheridan Blvd. in Westminster -- Dec. 14 Bank of the West at 5805 Carr Street in Arvada -- Dec. 16 Bank of the West at 5805 Carr Street in Arvada -- Dec. 28Including the Bank of the West robbery, two other banks were robbed on Monday. The FBI said there have been 35 bank robberies in Colorado this month and nearly 200 this year. Last year there were 135 bank robberies during the year."It's starting to (make a difference). I mean this is only eight of the bank robberies that have occurred this year, of the almost 200. But we hope that this is a start or at least a step in the right direction," Joly said.Committing a bank robbery is punishable by a 20-year prison term for each offense and increases if a dangerous weapon is used in the commission of the crime, Joly said.If anyone has any information on any bank robbery, call the FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force at 303-629-7171; or, you can remain anonymous and earn up to $2,000 by calling CRIMESTOPPERS at 720-913-STOP (7867).This is the list of the banks robbed so far this month:Dec 1:
