DENVER -- The popular Ski Train that had ferried passengers between Denver and Winter Park since 1940 will not run at all during the 2009-2010 season.Iowa Pacific Holdings has not been able to reach an operational agreement with Amtrak, which was to provide crews to operate the train. The entire Ski Train season was canceled Monday. Last week, a federal judge denied Iowa Pacific's request for a temporary restraining order, which would have forced Amtrak to provide operational crews for the ski train operation. Iowa Pacific officials said they contacted Amtrak after the judge's ruling to attempt to resolve the issue, but they were unable to reach reconciliation.
The Ski Train began selling tickets on Nov. 3 and was to have made its first run on Dec. 27, with its season continuing to March. The train would have operated with diesel locomotives, modern coach cars, and refurbished dome, club and café lounge cars. Refunds will be issued to those who have already purchased tickets.Ed Ellis, president of Iowa Pacific, said the Ski Train was "heavily reliant on advance bookings, which came to a complete halt last week." The company lost revenue from the initial runs, and Ellis said the delay in run would result in "insufficient sales for the train to be self-sustaining for this season."To receive a full refund, customers can contact the reservations center at skitrainservice@iowapacific.com or call 877-726-RAIL. Customers will need their confirmation number and credit card available.
