COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- More than 100 people are spending Christmas some place other than their home after a busted boiler and broken pipes caused flooding at a large apartment complex. The flooding occurred at the Highland Legends Apartments located at 7200 East 72nd Avenue in Commerce City."Some firemen came and they knocked on our door and told us we had to go to a motel," said resident Ramona Morales.
Investigators said around 9:30 a.m. the boiler malfunctioned, and several pipes burst, causing flooding to several apartments. The broken boiler also caused electricity and heat to shut down for the entire building, which has approximately 48 units. So residents were left with no heat, no water, no electricity and no toilets and had to evacuate."I can't believe this is happening to us," Morales said.A day meant to be spent with family at home quickly became a moving day."It's a special time, but since this happened, we don't want to do," said resident Joe Flores, who had to move his sister and their dog.To have some many pipes burst like this all at once may seem unusual, but according to the Red Cross, its volunteers deal with one or two cases just like this every year."Anytime it gets cold in some of these older buildings, it definitely gets to become an issue," said Chris Dunn, with the American Red Cross.Repair work is expected to take all weekend. No injuries were reported. The management at the apartment complex relocated several families to vacant apartments in other buildings in the complex, but a majority of the evacuees were taken by RTD bus to the Red Cross shelter at Kearney Middle School, located at 6160 Kearney St.Right now, it appears that this is the first time there's been a problem like this at the complex but Commerce City officers said future building inspections will likely be completed as part of their investigation.
