Comedian Donates $1.2 Million To Hospital

Larry The Cable Guy Wants To Build New Facility

POSTED: 10:07 am MST December 22, 2009

The comedian known as Larry the Cable Guy is giving more than $1 million to a Nebraska hospital, KETV in Omaha reported.

“Just as we were wrestling with how to make our plans a reality, two angels appeared to help and they said, 'Let’s git 'r done.'” said Marsha Lommel of Lincoln’s Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.

Dan Whitney, Larry the Cable Guy’s real name, said his wife, Cara, told him about Madonna a few months ago.

“She says, ‘Honey, you’ve got to see this video.’ She started crying right away and I said, ‘I’ve got to be honest with you, I don’t think I want to see the video,’” Whitney said.

The video profiles four patients and their journey to recovery at Madonna. In particular, it showed an agonizing year for a little girl and her family from Texas. Her story touched the Whitneys' hearts.

“We’re going to give $1.2 million to Madonna Rehab Hospital today. It will go to establish a new children’s rehab hospital,” Dan Whitney said.

The Whitneys are naming the hospital after Alexis, the little girl in the video.

“Thousands of children will be given a chance to recover from debilitating illness and injury the way Alexis has, because of this donation,” said Alexis’ father Brandon Verzal.

Alexis will use the hospital herself as she continues her therapy. She calls her angel “Larry the Guy.”

The new hospital will have 14 beds, a new gymnasium, a playground and room for family members.
