Boy Goes After Ball That Falls Into Water Fountain In Middle Of Pond

A toddler is alive and well thanks to the quick thinking of two 10-year-old girls who saw him fall into an icy pond.

3-year-old Isaiah Casillas was playing with a ball Sunday afternoon when it rolled on to the ice of a partially frozen pond at The Promenade At Towne Center apartment complex on South Sable Boulevard and East Alameda Avenue.

In the center of the pond, which is about 50 feet in diameter, is a water fountain that is still running and sprays water. The entire pond is iced up except for the middle area where the water jets spray into the air. The ball fell into this 10-foot hole and Casillas walked out on to the ice, grabbed the ball and fell in.

"He just walked over it to get the ball and he fell," said the boy's sister, Lidia Casillas.

One of two 10-year-old cousins who were sitting on a patio facing the pond, saw him fall in.

"We were doing homework," said Delma Solis. "Azalea (Ocon) said, 'that boy fell in.' I didn't have my glasses on so I'm like that's just a fish. Then I saw his head bobbing up and down and ran over. Azalea went inside to tell her parents."

"I called 911," Ocon said. "They asked me where I was and I said, 'at home.' They asked me if the child was breathing, I said, 'yes.'"

The water was about 2-feet deep but Isaiah was so shocked by how cold it was, he could not climb out, police said.

Solis walked out onto the ice to retrieve the toddler.

"I was scared like the ice could break any minute. I just grabbed his hand, but I didn't know how to pull him out cause I was afraid that I would fall in too."

That's when a woman who was visiting one of the girl's parents came over and helped Solis pull the boy out of the water.

"It was scary. The boy was screaming. He was yelling. He was scared, he was cold," said witness Andrew Guyton."I went to grab some towels just to throw them on him just to keep him warm."

Ambulance crews arrived and transported the boy to Children's Hospital.

At the time of the accident, Isaiah's mom was taking a shower and his father was doing laundry.

"My dad told my other brother to take Isaiah to the office and watch him, but he didn't," Lidia Casillas said.

Isaiah's mother is grateful to the two girls.

"It's a miracle. I thank God. The Good Samaritan is like an angel to save his life," said his mother, also named Lidia Casillas.

Police say the girls reacted like adults, and were very mature in how they handled the situation.

"Those two girls did an amazing job in saving this little boy's life," said, Det. Bob Friel, of the Aurora Police Department.

Friel said this accident points out the importance of supervising children whenever they're playing in an area with a water feature.

"I think they should close the fountain down because a lot of kids play around here," the boy's sister said.

When told that they gave Isaiah's mom and dad the best Christmas present they could ask for, their son's life, one of the good samaritans replied, "It's a real special one because you don't get one everyday.

The other said, "I'm happy that I gave them the best Christmas present they could ask for."
