Arvada Restaurant Owner Wins 'Worst Boss Of 2009'

Paul Martinez Accused Of Repeatedly Groping, Firing 16-Year-Old Girl

The dubious world title of "Worst Boss of 2009" goes to an Arvada restaurant co-owner accused of sexually harassing female workers, including a 16-year-old girl who was fired after she complained about the boss groping her.

Paul Martinez, co-owner and manager of the family-run Alamos Verdes restaurant, beat out the Oakland Raiders coach accused of breaking an assistant's jaw, and a Louisiana water department superintendent captured on tape using "hundreds of obscenities" against employees and ordering a supervisor to physically attack a worker.

The world-wide ranking of the 25 "Worst Bosses of 2009" was chosen by a panel of four workplace experts at eBossWatch.com, a resource that helps job seekers evaluate managers and potential employers.

Paul Martinez earned the Number 1 Worst Boss title after the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a discrimination lawsuit against Alamos Verdes Oct. 5., accusing the restaurateur and his brother Greg Martinez of "simply repulsive" sexual harassment against young female employees.

An EEOC statement accused Paul Martinez of repeatedly groping the 16-year-old girl worker and making crude jokes and comments. The teen was illegally fired in retaliation for complaining about the harassment, the EEOC lawsuit stated.

Paul Martinez did not immediately respond to requests for comment by 7NEWS Monday afternoon. His attorney, Daniel Satriana Jr., said he would have to review the eBossWatch.com announcement and confer with his client before commenting.

Nine women who have worked at the restaurant have joined the EEOC lawsuit against Alamos Verdes.

The Martinez brothers' mother, Emma Martinez, who with her husband, John, has owned and operated the restaurant at 5304 Vance St. for 31 years, has called the allegations "untrue," "unfair" and frightening.

But EEOC officials harshly condemned the alleged conduct of Paul and Greg Martinez.

"The way these young women were treated is simply repulsive," EEOC Denver Field Office Director Nancy Sienko said in October. "I can think of no worse way to be introduced into the workforce than to be degraded and groped by your middle-aged bosses.

"What is worse is that even after these women complained, nothing happened. The family kept operating the business as usual," she added.
