Man Charged In Racial Attack

A white man has been charged with a bias-motivated crime after he allegedly hurled racial slurs at a black woman then dragged her out of a bar by her hair.

The victim identified Dustin Meadows, 37, as the man in a black suit who spilled a beer on her, then yelled obscenities before ripping out her hair, according to a report from the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

Meadows was charged Wednesday with a felony bias-motivated crime for assault. He also was charged with four misdemeanors, including harassment and assault.

The incident happened Saturday night at the Calla Inn in unincorporated Summit County. The victim said a man in a black suit and yellow tie was dancing behind her while she sat at the bar and "accidentally spilled a beer" on her, according to the police report.

"What, no apology?" the victim said to the man, according to the report. Meadows then started to "cuss at her" and hurled a racial epiteth before he was pulled away by other patrons at the bar. Two women who were with Meadows apologized for his behavior.

A few minutes later, Meadows again started to call the victim names as he was leaving the bar. The victim said she stood up and yelled at the man to leave. That's when Meadows "grabbed her by the hair and dragged her out the door of the bar," the police report says. Several bar patrons helped the woman get away from Meadows.

When police arrived, both of the victim's hands were "full of her hair, and it was apparent that the whole right side of her head was missing hair," the police report says.

Two men at the bar followed Meadows to a nearby condominium complex. Meadows had a bloody nose and blood stains on his shirt when deputies knocked on his door. Meadows wouldn't tell deputies how he was injured.

Meadows admitted being at the bar. When deputies asked him what happened, he said, "A female said some rude stuff to me so he got involved with her," the report says.

Meadows' wife, who was with him when he was questioned by deputies, declined to give a statement.

Officials say several witnesses confirmed the victim's allegations.
