VAIL, Colo. -- Tiger Woods managed to crash again, but won the Dummy Demolition Derby at Vail Thursday night. It wasn't the real Tiger Woods, but a photo of him, driving a fake Cadillac Escalade on skis, complete with girlfriends in the windows. The entry, by employees of Vail's Arrabelle Hotel, won the $5,000 first-place prize in the annual demolition derby, held on the slopes at Golden Peak.
The unmanned sleds were sent down the slope and over a ski jump, crashing below.Judges rated the sleds on creativity, quality of air, quality of the crash and crowd response.David Wieder, one of the five men who helped construct the 300-pound sled, said they came up with the idea two days before the contest and worked right up until the race to finish it.It was made out of drywall and lumber and painted to look like a Cadillac Escalade."We even put headlights on it that lit up," he told TheDenverChannel.com. "Part of it broke as we were pushing it up the hill and we had to repair it on the spot."Wieder said the ski jump was quite spectacular."When it went off the jump, it went the farthest of all," he said. "When it crashed, it broke into 1,000 pieces because of all the drywall we used."About 700 people turned out Thursday night to watch 16 dummies on sleds crash, as part of Vail Snow Daze.Wieder, who works as an engineer at the Arrabelle, said the prize money was split among the five people involved in building the sled.
