WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- A bandit, who allegedly pocketed sunglasses at the same ophthalmology shop multiple times over the past couple months, was arrested Thursday afternoon when he apparently came back for a fourth time."This is where he just kind of slipped in & helped himself to a few pairs," said Dr. Melinda O'Rourke, owner of Northwest Eye Center at 4855 Ward Road, as she pointed to a partially empty sunglasses display. "He takes 10 to 15 pairs of sunglasses each time he comes in."Gary Anthony Santistevan, 43, allegedly walked into the Northwest Eye Center Thursday afternoon and was recognized by employees as the same man who had previously taken high-end sunglasses, said Lisa Stigall, spokeswoman for the Wheat Ridge Police Department.
The suspect had previously been caught on surveillance video cameras that had been added just for him, and his expensive tastes."Always the high-end, easily saleable I presume. The Coach, Valentino, Oakley, all of our high-end glasses," O'Rourke said. She was especially surprised to see him back in the store Wednesday, December 9 and again the very next day."As soon as he walked in he stood right in front of his photo and said 'I was here yesterday.' Reminding me of the fact," O'Rourke said, shaking her head in amazement. "It's over. And we're glad that he's gone. We can sleep a little easier."Police were called and arrested the suspect at the store, without incident."I think we're gonna re-arrange our optical a little bit, probably put our sunglasses under lock & key. If there's one of him out there there could be more so...But I'm just happy that he's off the street," O'Rourke said. The first theft occurred in October of 2008, O'Rourke said. But then it happened again in 2009, on September 22, when six pairs of sunglasses were stolen. Each pair of sunglasses was valued at $150 to $250. The thief returned Wednesday, stealing 10 pairs of sunglasses, each retailing for $155 to $250, Stigall said.Santistevan was arrested Thursday after he walked into the store again, had a conversation with some of the employees and began to "shop," Stigall said. Employees called 911. Santistevan was not armed when he was arrested.Santistevan was booked on suspicion of felony theft. He also had an active warrant for failure to appear, stemming from a misdemeanor theft charge in April.
