Train Derails; Empty Freight Car Lands On Highway 72
Highway 72 Reopened Following Derailment

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Eight cars of a Union Pacific freight train derailed Thursday morning on the east side of Coal Creek Canyon, west of Denver, sending one car crashing onto Highway 72.The empty car that fell onto the highway fell off a railroad overpass and blocked both lanes of Highway 72.The highway was shut down for seven hours until railroad crews could clear the tracks.
The freight train was heading from Denver to Salt Lake City and was on the same route taken by the Winter Park Ski train.The crash site is southwest of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge.
