Two Dead After Head-On Collision

Accident Closed Highway 285 Near Fairplay

UPDATED: 11:48 pm MST December 6, 2009

Two people are dead after a truck and SUV collided on Colorado Highway 285 Saturday evening.

The Colorado State Patrol reports that a Dodge Ram pickup truck struck a Jeep Grand Cherokee head-on while passing a row of vehicles on Highway 285 near the town of Fairplay in Park County.

The Dodge was traveling northbound at mile marker 188 and passed three cars in the passing lane when it came upon the Jeep heading the opposite direction. Each vehicle swerved to avoid the collision but not soon enough, the CSP reports.

State Patrol said the Jeep's driver, 48-year-old Marion Whitmore, and passenger, 54-year-old Dale Whitmore -- both from Buena Vista, Colo., were pronounced at the scene. Marion Whitmore was wearing her seat belt but Dale was not.

The driver of the Dodge was identified as 48-year-old Timothy Taylor of Fairplay. Taylor was wearing his seat belt and was transported to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.

The crash is still being investigated but alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Highway 285 was closed for several hours Saturday night due to the accident.
